Advancing the Art of Teaching

Suited for any style of yoga practice, Downward Dog Yoga Centre's 300-hour program will give you the skills to effectively lead a dynamic, informative, and well-integrated yoga class. Effective teaching is a function of personal practice and study over time and occurs when we teach from the experience of our bodies and our lives. Once the basic foundations of personal practice have been mastered, the transformative effects of yoga can be shared with others. Enhance and explore your capacity as a teacher. Drawing from the foundation of your personal practice, this program is designed to foster your knowledge and voice as an effective teacher.

Our program is flexible and comprehensive! With our modular structure, you may choose to spread the program over one year (must be completed by the end of 2020) or complete it sooner, as your schedule allows. The required core courses are offered once annually and taught by Ron Reid, Marla Meenakshi Joy, and Pat Harada Linfoot. They provide the building blocks necessary to become an inspiring, knowledgeable yoga teacher, no matter what style of yoga you wish to teach. Elective courses are available throughout the year, subject to change, and are taught by Downward Dog Yoga Centre faculty and international guest teachers. You can broaden your field of learning through your choice of electives which also includes our annual immersion course in Costa Rica.

Please see the Program Objectives for an overview of the areas of study and what you can expect to learn.

Personal Practice

Continued study and development of one's own personal practice is key to becoming a gifted teacher. A minimum of 30 hours of Mysore practice will be required to complete the program. See our Class Schedule for Mysore practice times.

Observing the practice of others and assisting teachers with their classes are essential ingredients in developing one's own teaching style.  Ten hours of assisting in regularly scheduled classes will also be required.
