frequently asked questions

What style of yoga do you teach?
Our classes are grounded in the Ashtanga Vinyasa lineage and focus on asana (physical postures) and pranayama (breath) as a method to initiate proper alignment and inner focus.

Our beginner yoga classes (Yoga Fundamentals & Yoga Basics) work with the foundational aspects of alignment, breath and posture; while our Vinyasa classes (Levels 1 through 3) bring greater focus on strength, stability and mobility while moving through a continuous flow of postures. Level 2 & 3 classes can be physically challenging and are best suited for students with an established practice.

Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga are practiced seated or lying down and postures are held for long periods of time. These classes improve relaxation of the deep connective tissues in the body and have a meditative focus.

We offer a daily Mysore/Self-Practice program.

What can I expect in a typical class?
Each teacher has their own style, yet you can expect each class to take you through a sequence of asana that will be both challenging and well informed. We have classes with music, chanting and sometimes offer classes with live musicians. Be sure to check out our regular schedule to see what is up and coming. We encourage you to experience classes with an open mind and different teachers to see what type of class setting resonates with you.

How do I get started?
We recommend new students begin with yoga fundamentals. These classes initiate a deep awareness of your body, mind and breath and will introduce you to many of the poses you will experience in a Vinyasa class.

If you are new to Downward Dog we recommend our new student special – 2 weeks unlimited for $30. Please arrive 15 minutes before your first class to complete our registration form, receive your Downward Dog card and become acquainted with the space.

Should I pre-register for classes?
No. All of the classes on our schedule are drop-ins, unless otherwise specified as Pre-Register. We recommend arriving 15 minutes before class, especially during peak hours.

What should I expect upon arrival at the studio?
As you first enter our front entranceway you will see some beautiful wood shelves lining two walls. We ask that you take off your shoes and place them on the shelves. Please do not leave your shoes on and do not leave them on the floor. Make your way up to our reception area at the top of the stairs. We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes before class in order for our receptionist to have more time to greet you and answer any questions you might. Once you have completed the registration form and signed up for class you may enter the change rooms. If you are not sure which studio your class is in, please ask the receptionist.

What should I wear to a yoga class?
In any movement based classes we recommend light, comfortable, breathable attire. In a restorative or yin practice where postures are mostly done laying down and held for longer we recommend light, loose fitting clothing for added comfort.

Do I need a mat and towel?
Mats are available to rent for $2. The studio does not have towel service. Anti slip mat towels are available for purchase in our boutique.

Do you offer hot yoga?
No, we do not offer hot yoga classes. Our studio maintains a temperature between 28-30 degrees Celsius during classes.

Busy classes with 35–50 students may contribute to an elevation in the studio temperature. We have fans in both studios do our very best to accommodate the comfort of our students.

Are there lockers?
Personal belongings can be hung on hooks or stored in the change room cubbies. There are a few shelves in the studio for valuables such as wallets, jewellery and mobile phones. Please be mindful about turning your phone off while class is in session.
