Nicky turned to yoga after many years of study of Mahayana Buddhism, initiated by an extended period of study and travel in the Indian Himalaya in 1999. A dedicated student in the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa system, Nicky started teaching in 2004 and founded Breathing Room Yoga Studio, the first yoga studio in Vietnam which she nurtured and until leaving in Saigon in 2009.
In 2009, Nicky moved to Toronto and launched the 889 Living Yoga Teacher Training Program, a teacher training program which she continues to direct, and is the lead teacher with a faculty of outstanding specialists from across the world. Nicky’s been a devoted community member at Downward Dog studio since she has been a resident of Toronto.
Nicky’s primary source of inspiration has been her deep studies with Shiva Rea since 2006. She has completed the Prana Flow teacher training program several times over, and is registered at the highest RYT500 level with the Yoga Alliance. Nicky is part of a small group of senior teachers in the Prana Flow Collective to assist Shiva regularly at teacher trainings and retreats worldwide.
Nicky has a genuinely unique set of personal movement and meditation practices undertaken over a long period of time all around the globe. From12 years of rigorous classical ballet training in New Zealand, traditional initiation into Kalarippayat (a South Indian weapons based martial arts practice), thousands of hours and various forms of Hatha Yoga with the worlds leading teachers (too many to list!), Pre and Post Natal yoga, Ayurvedic practices, and Yoga Philosophy particularly from the tantric period. As well as teaching yoga, she also works as a Thai Yoga Massage practitioner and Birth Doula.
A mother now for ten years, Nicky’s greatest teachers and sources of joy are her two little boys – Tai and Kien. She loves to help her students learn more about themselves through the discipline and creative expression of yoga, and is proud after more than 15 years of practice to still call herself a curious beginner.
